Message From Our Pastor and Association

Brother Guy posted a video answering the question, "Should a church meet during a pandemic?" Click here to see the video.

Brother Jeremy Randolf, Director of the Harmony-Pittsburg Baptist Association, sent the following letter to all the churches in our association yesterday:

The Harmony-Pittsburg Baptist Association takes the threat of the Coronavirus Pandemic very seriously. Our Coordinating Council met yesterday morning (Monday morning), where we wrestled with various scenarios, and evaluated possible paths forward during this crisis. Our council, and myself as the Director of the Association, are recommending that churches do not gather together for worship or other activities, for the next two weeks. There have been recommendations from the CDC and from the White House on limiting gatherings to less than 50, and then less than 10 people, although none of these recommendations were directed at churches. In part, I believe, because the government does not want to be seen as dictating terms toward places of worship (and rightly so). Despite the fact that these recommendations have not been directed toward our churches, we do have a responsibility, as followers of Jesus, to our church membership and to the community around us. As followers of Jesus, we have a responsibility to be faithful to His command to love our neighbor. And right now, loving our neighbor means doing what we can to promote social distancing (not meeting together in large groups). in order to flatten the curve. You may have heard about this on the news, or seen it online, but what it means is that if we make some short-term sacrifices, by not meeting together for these two weeks, we thereby lower the risk of infections across our communities, and we give our health care system breathing room. We allow the system to not be overwhelmed with patients and allow people with all kinds of illnesses to be treated, not just those who have the coronavirus.

I want you to know that we did not come to this decision lightly, But if we, as followers of Christ pay attention, we will see this not as a threat to the church, but as an opportunity to tangibly express the love of Christ to our community.

With fear and panic running rampant, even here in rural East Texas, we have an opportunity to speak the gospel into people's lives. We have the opportunity to say, "We didn't make this decision because we are afraid of the coronavirus, but we made this decision because we want to see the greatest number of people possible exposed to the saving power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This is not permanent. We will be constantly re-evaluating the situation, as new information comes in daily. We will keep you informed of any future recommendations. As I close, I want to remind you of 2 Timothy 2:7, God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love, and self-control.
